The famous Penafiel water is bottled just outside the town of Tehuacan in Mexico. The water goes through a process of sediment filtration and ultraviolet light treatment before being carbonated. The bottling plant is powered by hydroelectricity. Penafiel is highly mineralized and has aggressive carbonation, and has been bottled and distributed throughout Mexico since 1928. Tehuacan is a renowned health resort located at 5,499 feet, situated in the shadow of the Citlaltepetl mountains, including the towering Orizaba Peak at 19,600 feet. The town is the source of Penafiel and is known for its warm mineral water, which is produced through rainwater and snowmelt filtering through volcanic strata. The water flows at a rate of 3,250 gallons per minute. It is said that Montezuma used to take the waters at Tehuacan to build his strength before battling Cortes.
